Local artists  celebrated Hyde Park’s 150th Birthday with an Arts Festival at the Martini Hatch Shell

This day-long, outdoor, family friendly arts celebration featured:

  • Battle of the Arts: artists compete against each other in a timed creation of artwork for cash prizes. Talented local artists aged 16 and up will create original works of art right before your eyes.
  • Local musicians, singers, dancers, poets and spoken word artists live on stage.
  • Steam-roller Mega Printing: Artists and their teams will ink pre-carved relief blocks and then roll them over with an industrial steamroller to create their oversized prints.
  • Art Vendors and Graffiti Artists
  • Art and poetry creation tables for children and adults.

Battle of the Arts

Artists who participated in the Battle of the Arts were required to register in advance.
All artwork must be created ON SITE during the battle. They brought their own canvas, paper, paints, pencils, boards, any supplies and media but do not start anything in advance and do not bring any finished pieces to the Battle.

Steamroller Mega Printmaking Event

Artists and their teams inkrf pre-carved relief blocks and then roll over them with an industrial steamroller to create their oversized prints.

Date: Sunday, September 9, 2018

When: During the Urban Arts Festival and the Battle of the Arts

Where: Francis D. Martini Memorial Shell Park and Moynihan Recreation Area
1015 Truman Parkway
Hyde Park, MA 02136

Time of the Printing Event: 10 am – 5pm. Artists must commit to helping set up before and clean up after the event.

Materials: Artists use their own carving tools (hand or power) to make their printing plate. Plywood, MDF (medium density fiberboard), or linoleum may be used.

Sizes: Images must be a minimum of 30″ x 48″ but no larger than 40″ x 72″

Art Teams: Artists may collaborate on one print. They may subdivide the printing area under a common theme, or divide tasks (i.e., design and carving).

Images: Only original sketches, drawing, paintings, graphics or digitally altered photography

Fees $100 fee for one print, includes paper, ink, rolling supplies, cleaning supplies, a steam-roller, a tent and area to dry prints

Ink: only Black

What you Bring: only your pre-cut printing plate

Organization: Artists and volunteers will divide into teams. One for inking (dirty) and one for handling the paper before and after printing (clean)

Exhibitions: Prints will be showcased in town at various venues.

Workshops: Were set up at the Menino Arts Center and the Community Center for designing, transferring and carving. Carving tools will be available.
