Basic Watercolor Workshop with Larry Johnson

Learn how to employ the watercolor medium to its best advantage, using washes and other techniques to create illuminated color compositions. By accurately rendering the color and textures of still life objects and nature scenes you will be able to understand and explore the possibilities of watercolor painting in a friendly supportive atmosphere. All levels welcome. Materials provided or bring your own.
Larry Johnson, a 1979 graduate of The Art Institute of Boston, has been an artist all his life. He grew up making homemade comic books and self-published his book Tales of Fantasy for several years. These days he draws and paints landscapes, fantasy scenes and still life subject matter. A long time resident of Jamaica Plain, he moved to Hyde Park in 2009, and for five years taught a comic book workshop at The Menino Arts Center. He currently teaches drawing at the MAC and to residents of local retirement communities through the Hyde Park Art Association’s Mobile Arts Program.

By employing a simple approach you can accurately render still life objects with outline drawing. Learn how to look at and respond to what you see to integrate form, perspective and a sense of weight to create a convincing drawing. Challenge yourself in a supportive and fun atmosphere. All levels are welcome. Materials provided.
Intro to Oil Painting with Judith Robichaud
Three Wednesdays, April 16 – 30, 630 – 830 pm
Held at the MAC

This class is for anyone who is curious about the magic of oil paint and is looking to learn more about this medium. The class will demystify painting with oils by discussing the features and qualities of the medium and will include hands-on practice mixing and painting with oil colors. Both traditional oil paint and water-mixable oils will be covered; as well as supplies and best practices for using oils in your painting practice. Some painting experience in any medium is preferred but not a requirement to take the class.
Supplies Needed:
– palette or palette paper
– a few brushes (small, medium, large)
– palette knife
– one 9×12 canvas pad or a few inexpensive canvas boards (8×10)
– oil paint any brand like Gamblin or Windsor Newton (mars or ivory black, ultramarine blue, cadmium red light, cadmium yellow or lemon yellow, titanium white)
– linseed oil and a small jar with a lid
– paper towels or shop towels
Judith Robichaud, a fine artist and HPAA member, has shown her work at several art fairs and galleries in Boston and New York. Judith claims her professional artist life started when she began renting a studio at the Menino Art Center in 2011. She has since maintained a consistent studio practice while juggling the art fair scene, freelancing and volunteering for Roslindale Open Studios.
Hand Puppet Creation with Thomas Coon
Three Thursdays, May 22 – June 5, 6 – 8 pm
Held at the MAC

This is an amazing workshop for those interested in creating something truly unique and personalized! Over the course of three weeks, participants will have the chance to develop not just technical skills, but also their creative vision, all while working on creating personalized hand puppets. Thomas will teach an in-depth approach to constructing using paper mache the first week, choosing the perfect clothing for the puppets and painting the puppets the second week, and then ending the workshop with assembling the hand puppets the third week. Thomas’ diverse artistic experience will offer a fresh perspective on the puppet-making process, encouraging students to see beyond the traditional craft and infuse their own artistic interpretation into each piece. Thomas will also be discussing the many forms of puppets through exhibiting some from his personal collection and talking about puppets in many artistic mediums such as TV, movies, and Theatre.
Supplies Provided by the MAC:

Thomas Coon works in multi dimensional art including installations, mix mediums, woodworking, acrylic, and oils, to name a few. His approach to his craft is to give the viewer a different perspective on viewing images and everyday objects that the viewer might often just casually observe. For over 20 years, Thomas has been offering his artistic talents through volunteerism to people in many various disadvantaged circumstances. This is to inspire them to achieve their full potential through art. Through his Volunteerism in Massachusetts, Thomas has taught at The Little House, Saint Frances House, Boston Living Center, The Museum of Fine Arts and The Young Adult Vocational Program to name a few.
