Basic Drawing Workshop with Larry Johnson
Saturday, January 4, 10 am – 12 pm
Held at the MAC

By employing a simple approach you can accurately render still life objects with outline drawing. Learn how to look at and respond to what you see to integrate form, perspective and a sense of weight to create a convincing drawing. Challenge yourself in a supportive and fun atmosphere. All levels are welcome. Materials provided.
Larry Johnson, a 1979 graduate of The Art Institute of Boston, has been an artist all his life. He grew up making homemade comic books and self-published his book Tales of Fantasy for several years. These days he draws and paints landscapes, fantasy scenes and still life subject matter. A long time resident of Jamaica Plain, he moved to Hyde Park in 2009, and for five years taught a comic book workshop at The Menino Arts Center. He currently teaches drawing at the MAC and to residents of local retirement communities through the Hyde Park Art Association’s Mobile Arts Program.
Basic Watercolor Workshop with Larry Johnson
One Day Workshop on Saturday, January 11, 10 am – 12 noon

Learn how to employ the watercolor medium to its best advantage, using washes and other techniques to create illuminated color compositions. By accurately rendering the color and textures of still life objects and nature scenes you will be able to understand and explore the possibilities of watercolor painting in a friendly supportive atmosphere. All levels welcome. Materials provided or bring your own.
Invitation to Poetry with Linda Carney-Goodrich
Six Mondays, February 24 – March 31, 630 – 830 pm
$180 early bird discount until February 3, then $210
Have you ever wanted to write poetry but don’t know how to start? Are you curious about the language of poetry and its many forms? Would you like to read, discuss and try your own hand at different styles of poetry in a supportive and encouraging environment? In this workshop we will read and discuss a wide range of poetry from modern spoken word to the ancient and more formal. Each session will focus on a specific theme and include many prompts to get you writing. This workshop is an invitation to delve into art made of words, sounds, and metaphor. It is open to all, from the nervous beginner to the more confident poet.
Linda Carney-Goodrich, Ed.M, is a writer and teacher from Boston. Her work has appeared in Lily Poetry, The MacGuffin, Nixes Mate, Literary Mama, Muddy River, Gyroscope, Wordgathering Journal of Disability Poetry and Literature, among others. Her story, “Park Street Station” won third prize in the 2024 Boston in 100 Words Contest and another story of hers was a finalist in the 2023 Boston in 100 Word Contest. Over the years, several of her poems have been displayed at Boston City Hall as part of the annual Boston Mayor’s Poetry Program judged by the Boston Poet Laureate. Linda is the Poetry Coordinator for the Menino Art Center in Hyde Park and the owner of Home Scholars of Boston. She has a Masters in Education from Harvard Graduate School of Education and has taught people of all ages and backgrounds for over two decades.
